In Memory of Rebecca Cheptegei: A Call to Confront Domestic Violence and Honor Her Legacy

I am deeply saddened and outraged by the tragic death of our Ugandan Olympic athlete Rebecca Cheptegei – a brutal and senseless act of domestic violence. This horrific attack, which has taken her life, is a stark reminder of the urgent need to confront and end violence against women in all its forms.

Violence against women is a grave violation of human rights, and no society should tolerate it. Rebecca’s death is not just a loss to the world of sports, but a profound loss to her family, friends, and community. I extend my deepest sympathies to all who knew and loved her, especially her family who must now navigate the unimaginable pain of her absence.

While justice must be served for Rebecca, we know that no amount of legal retribution can bring her back or ease the suffering of those affected. However, justice is crucial, and it must be swift and uncompromising. We cannot allow perpetrators of such heinous crimes to walk free. It is time for authorities to take decisive action, not only in this case but in addressing the broader epidemic of gender-based violence that continues to plague our societies.
