According to Lancet (2022), there are an estimated 5.4 million children in the world who are growing up in institutions as of the year 2022. More than 80% of the children are not orphans, but have been unnecessarily separated from their families because of poverty and discrimination. Several decades of research have shown that orphanages harm children and expose them to abuse and trafficking. Providing support for children growing up with their families can prevent this from happening. Our efforts can also be directed at promoting causes that support social structures that protect children from abuse and neglect. We can also strengthen communities so that families at risk can receive the services they need.
